We’ve all been there. You light the candle, whisper the words, maybe even feel a little spark… but something’s missing. The spell feels flat. Off. Like you’re following a recipe that doesn’t quite fit your craving.

That’s often a sign that the intention behind the spell isn’t aligned with your truth.

Because spellwork isn’t about “asking the Universe” for whatever sounds good in the moment. It’s about tuning into your deepest desires, the ones that come from the core of your being, and directing your energy with clarity and purpose.

What Is an Intention in Magick?

An intention is the energetic blueprint of your spell. It’s the “why” underneath the “what.” While the spell might involve herbs, candles, moon phases, and words, the intention is what brings it to life. Without it, your magick can feel hollow.

An authentic intention comes from within—not from comparison, not from pressure, not from what someone else says you should want. It’s born from self-awareness, desire, and alignment.

• What will feel different in my life when this manifests?

Often, your first answer is surface-level. The second or third reveals your truth.

2. Check for Authenticity, Not Just Aesthetics

Intentions that sound good on paper like “calling in abundance,” “finding love,” “stepping into power,” they only work if they’re specific and meaningful to you. Ask yourself:

• Is this mine, or is this what I think I should want?

• Does this intention support who I’m becoming?

If it doesn’t feel deeply personal, rework it.

3. Speak to the Energy, Not Just the Outcome

Instead of: “I want more clients.” Try: “I call in aligned connections that value my work and support my purpose.”

Instead of: “I want to lose weight.” Try: “I honor my body by releasing what no longer serves and calling in vitality.”

Energetic resonance is everything.

4. Let the Intention Lead the Spell

Once your intention is clear, build your spell around it, not the other way around. Choose tools, correspondences, moon phases, and words that echo the energy of your purpose.

Let your intention be the seed. The spell is how you plant and nurture it.

A Simple Intention-Setting Ritual

You’ll need:

• A white candle

• A piece of paper and pen

• A bowl of water or earth

• Light the candle and take a few grounding breaths.

• Write your intention in the present tense as if it’s already true. Example: I live in alignment with my truth. My work flows with purpose. I am fully supported.

• Read it aloud. Feel it in your body. If it feels off, adjust until it resonates.

• Fold the paper and place it under the bowl. Say: “As I will, so it flows. May this seed take root in all that I do.”

• Leave the candle to burn safely (or snuff it with gratitude).

• Keep the paper on your altar, or bury it when the intention has been realized.

The most powerful spells aren’t the most elaborate...they’re the most aligned.

When you cast from a place of truth, your magick becomes magnetic. Your energy becomes focused. And your path becomes clearer.
